Beginner’s Guide to Fencing: Panels

When it comes to fencing, most people assume it is pretty cut and dry. I want a white vinyl privacy fence around my yard can you give me a quote? And as much as we would love to, we will have some follow up questions first. So what even makes up a fence panel? Let’s take a look today!

No matter the kind of fencing you decide on, whether it be vinyl, aluminum, or wood will always have panels and posts. Depending on the kind, a panel can be made up of different components. Today we will be focusing on the various pieces of a vinyl panel.

A fence panel is made up of:

Rails: In most cases they have a top and a bottom rail, but in some instances there is also a mid-rail, see our product brochure for what panels require and a mid-rail and which ones do not. Shown in the figure below, you will see the rails in red text. The top panel is a picket fence and the bottom is a privacy fence.

Pickets: All panels include pickets, the panel type determines which type of picket is required. For picket fences there is a wide range of sizes that we offer. The 7/8″ picket is available in 3″, 6″, or 1.5″ widths with a dog ear or sharp picket cap.

Picket Spacing (only applicable in picket style fences): This is the spacing in between each picket, we offer a different variety for each kind of picket fence!

And privacy fencing has 7/8″ x 6″ Tongue & Groove pickets, these pickets connect together to achieve the privacy you are looking for. In the figure below the pickets and picket spacing are shown in blue text.

U-Channel (Privacy Panels ONLY):

In privacy panels, there is also u-channel. This is a small piece of vinyl shaped like a U and it goes on each end of the pickets to hide any cuts or imperfections on the ends.

Now that you have learned the components of the panel, you are one step closer to being able to successfully install the new fence you have been dreaming of. Contact us to get pricing on availability on the fence you are looking for!
